το Asante συνομίλησε αποκλειστικά με τον περκασιονίστα της μπάντας, Massimo Eusebio
Η μουσική κολεκτίβα Banda Olifante παρόλο που έχει κυκλοφορήσει μόνο ένα δίσκο (Banda Olifante 2009 – Felmay) κατάφερε και σημείωσε μεγάλη επιτυχία στην ευρωπαϊκή σκηνή. Η μουσική που «βγαίνει» από μια ντουζίνα (και βάλε!) ανθρώπων είναι δύσκολο να χαρακτηριστεί. Το μουσικό φάσμα που καλύπτουν, κινείται από το τυπικό folk μέχρι την fusion και από το klezmer έως την jazz. To Asante συνομίλησε με τον «καλλιτεχνικό διευθυντή» και περκασιονίστα της μπάντας, τον Massimo Eusebio.
Πως και σας ήρθε η ιδέα να φτιάξετε μια fusion μπάντα πνευστών;
Η ιδέα να δημιουργήσουμε μια πολυάριθμη μπάντα, αποτελούμενη κατά κύριο λόγο από πνευστά όργανα, γεννήθηκε από την επιθυμία και την ενθαρρυντική πρόκληση να εκφράσουμε, ειδικά στις ζωντανές συναυλίες, ένα δυνατό ηχητικό αντίκτυπο ακουστικών πηγών χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο ένα μικρό μέρος ηλεκτρικών ήχων. Το σχέδιό μας επίσης επιδιώκει να προσδώσει φόρο τιμής στο σύνολο των χάλκινων πνευστών, ξεκινώντας από το τυπικό στυλ μιας παραδοσιακής folk μπάντας για να καταλήξει σε περισσότερο αφοσιωμένα είδη, όπως η jazz και η σύγχρονη πειραματική μουσική.
Είναι τελικά η fusion μία απάντηση στην έλλειψη ιδεών της λεγόμενης mainstream μουσικής;
Με τον όρο "fusion" εννοούμε "ανάμιξη", και μ`αυτή την έννοια κινούμαστε σε ένα μουσικό περιβάλλον διαφορετικό από τη mainstream μουσική. Στην πραγματικότητα, η δική μας μουσική είναι μια "διαχωριστική γραμμή" ("di frontiera"/"di confine" είναι οι όροι που χρησιμοποιούμε για να μεταφράσουμε την αγγλική λέξη "fusion"), η οποία δεν είναι εμπνευσμένη από τη jazz rock της δεκαετίας του `70 αλλά από την πιο πρόσφατη, που πολλοί χαρακτηρίζουν ως "παγκόσμια jazz": δηλαδή αυτή τη χαρούμενη μίξη διαφορετικών ειδών που ισορροπούν μεταξύ του αυτοσχεδιασμού και της παγκόσμιας μουσικής.
Ποιοι οι αγαπημένοι σας δίσκοι; Ποιες οι επιρροές σας γενικά από μουσική, ταινίες ή βιβλία;
Ανάμεσα στα αγαπημένα μας άλμπουμ οπωσδήποτε ξεχωρίζει το "Kind of Blue" του Miles Davis και το "Αh Um" του Charles Mingus. Αλλά εκτός από τους δίσκους, θα μπορούσαμε ίσως να μιλήσουμε για τους καλλιτέχνες που μας ενέπνευσαν, και είναι πολλοί αυτοί: όσον αφορά τη jazz, οι World Saxophone Quartet, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, John Surman. Aπό την pop avant-garde, οι Brian Eno, Jon Hassell και David Byrne• από τη funk και την afro, η ασύγκριτη ομάδα πνευστών του James Brown, οι Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti και Ali Farka Toure. Aπό την klezmer και τη Βαλκανική μουσική, ο Frank London των Klezmatics, o Goran Bregovic και ο Boban Markovic. Όσον αφορά τον κινηματογράφο και τα βιβλία, μπορώ ν`απαντήσω μόνο για τον εαυτό μου: ανάμεσα στις πολυάριθμες ταινίες κοινωνικού και ψυχολογικού περιεχομένου που έχω εκτιμήσει περισσότερο από τη δεκαετία του `90, θυμάμαι το "Ο Καιρός των Τσιγγάνων" του Emir Kusturica, "Το Μίσος" του Mathieu Kassovitz, το "No Man`s Land" του Danis Tanovic, το "Χαμένα Όνειρα" ("Nuovomondo") του Emanuele Crialese, "O Επισκέπτης" του Thomas McCarthy. Σχετικά τώρα με τα βιβλία, μπορώ ν`αναφέρω κάποιες πρόσφατες αναγνώσεις: το "Life and Fate" του Vasily Grossman και το "The Kindly Ones" του Jonathan Littell, τα οποία αντανακλούν αμφότερα τη φρίκη των στρατοπέδων, του πολέμου και των ολοκληρωτικών καθεστώτων, αλλά μέσα από διαμετρικά αντίθετες οπτικές γωνίες. Επίσης θα αναφέρω την ανακάλυψή μου δύο κλασσικών της ψυχανάλυσης (που εφαρμόζεται σε κοινωνικά φαινόμενα) το "Η Ψυχολογία των Μαζών" και το "Ο Πολιτισμός Πηγή Δυστυχίας" του Sigmund Freud, που δυστυχώς αποδεικνύονται εκπληκτικά επίκαιρα.
Ποιο θα είναι το επόμενο βήμα των Banda Olifante μετά το εκπληκτικό ομώνυμο ντεπούτο και πια τα σχέδιά σας για το μέλλον;
Δουλεύουμε για την υλοποίηση ενός δεύτερου άλμπουμ του οποίου η κυκλοφορία είναι προγραμματισμένη για τον Φεβρουάριο-Μάρτιο του 2011, ως ένα περαιτέρω βήμα του γκρουπ "Banta Olifante". Ένα άλμπουμ που συμπεριλαμβάνει, όπως και στο πρώτο cd, την παρουσία διεθνών μουσικών όπως ο βιρτουόζος της Kora από το Μαλί, Mamadou Diabate.
Ποιο είναι το πιο «τρελό» όνειρό σας σαν μπάντα;
Με βάση την ιδέα που έχουμε για τη μουσική ως μια ανταλλαγή εμπειριών και ειδών, να κάνουμε μια παγκόσμια περιοδεία παίζοντας σε κάθε σκηνή με νέους ειδικούς καλεσμένους καλλιτέχνες.
Τι είναι καλύτερο τελικά: η δουλειά στο studio ή οι ζωντανές εμφανίσεις;
Είναι δύσκολο ν`απαντήσω σ`αυτή την ερώτηση, επειδή πρόκειται για δύο πολύ διαφορετικές εκφραστικές διαστάσεις. Η δουλειά στο στούντιο είναι συναρπαστική γιατί μας επιτρέπει να πλησιάσουμε όσο το δυνατόν πιο κοντά στην ιδέα που έχουμε για τον ήχο, όπως είχαμε φανταστεί τα τραγούδια πριν τα πραγματοποιήσουμε και τα ακούσουμε. Ειδικότερα, μας επιτρέπει να επεξεργαστούμε την τυπική πλευρά τους. Από την άλλη, οι ζωντανές εμφανίσεις μεταδίδουν μια μεγάλη ποσότητα ενέργειας μέσα από τη συμμετοχή του κοινού• είναι περισσότερο ικανοποιητικές από συναισθηματικής πλευράς.
Είναι δύσκολη η συνύπαρξη σε μία μπάντα αποτελούμενη από 12 άτομα;
Η οργάνωση και η διαχείριση του δικτύου επαφών σε μια μπάντα αποτελούμενη από δώδεκα στοιχεία (πάνω από δεκαπέντε, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τους φίλους μουσικούς που μας βοηθούν στις προσθήκες της τελευταίας στιγμής) είναι πολύ περίπλοκη, αν σκεφτούμε τον προγραμματισμό για τις πρόβες, τις ηχογραφήσεις και τις μεταφορές των live. Το να παίζεις είναι άλλη υπόθεση, εκεί οι δυσκολίες μετατρέπονται στην ευχαρίστηση του να βιώνεις την αλληλεπίδραση των επιμέρους οργάνων σαν να είναι γρανάζια μιας καλοκουρδισμένης μηχανής.
Τι θα έλεγες στον Μπερλουσκόνι αν τύχαινε να τον συναντήσεις;
Ο Μπερλουσκόνι, ένας ειδικός στην επικοινωνία και τη μαζική ύπνωση, δεν ενδιαφέρεται ν`ακούσει τους άλλους, παρά μόνο θέλει πάντα ν`ακούγεται ο ίδιος. Η ελληνική μυθολογία μας δίνει μια συμβολική αλληγορία που αναφέρει ότι η νύμφη Ηχώ μετατρέπεται σε πέτρα όταν προσπαθεί ν`ακουστεί από το Νάρκισσο. Μ`αυτό το παράδειγμα εννοώ πως είναι δύσκολο να βρεις θέματα να μοιραστείς με ένα μυαλό που έχει μείνει προσκολλημένο στην παιδική του ηλικία. Πώς λοιπόν μπορούμε να κρίνουμε διαφορετικά, από μια λογική οπτική γωνία, τη συμπεριφορά, τις δηλώσεις, τις πολιτικές επιλογές του Πρωθυπουργού μας;
Έχετε επισκεφτεί ποτέ την Ελλάδα;
Αυτή είναι άλλη μια ερώτηση που μπορώ να απαντήσω μόνο κρίνοντας απ` την προσωπική μου εμπειρία. Την έχω επισκεφτεί πολλές φορές ως τουρίστας, γυρνώντας τη κατά μήκος και κατά πλάτος: από τη Θεσσαλονίκη ως την Κρήτη, περνώντας από την Αθήνα• από τη Λευκάδα, τους Δελφούς και τα Μετέωρα μέχρι την Αλεξανδρούπολη. Όταν σκέφτεσαι τη Μεσόγειο, το μεγαλείο των νησιών της, τα πευκοδάση, τις ελιές και τα κυπαρίσσια, την πολιτιστική ζωντάνια της ως σταυροδρόμι λαών και ιστοριών, αμέσως σκέφτεσαι την Ελλάδα και πάντα με την επιθυμία να επιστρέψεις.
Ποιο μήνυμα θα ήθελες να στείλεις στους αναγνώστες του Asante;
Ναι, να συνεχίσουν να διαβάζουν το περιοδικό σας για δική τους ευχαρίστηση, για τη διεθνή "ανάσα" των θεμάτων που καλύπτετε και για τη συμβολή τους στη διάδοση του μουσικού πολιτισμού στον κόσμο.

How do you came up with the idea of making a fusion brass band?
The idea of giving life to a fusion brass band, composed mostly by wind instruments, stemmed from the desire and the stimulating challenge of expressing, especially in live concerts, a strong impact sound of acoustic source using only a small part of electrified sounds. Our project also intends to pay homage to the universe of brass starting from the typical style of a traditional folk band, to arrive to more committed genres, such as jazz and contemporary experimentation.
Is fusion an answer to the lack of fresh ideas in mainstream music?
By fusion we mean "contamination", and in this sense we move into a musical environment different from mainstream. Our music is in fact a "borderline" ("di frontiera"/"di confine" are the terms we use in order to translate the english word "fusion"), that isn`t inspired by the jazz rock of the seventies but by the more current one, defined by many as "global jazz": namely that happy blend of different kinds in the balance between improvisation and world music.
Which are your favourite records ever? Which are your inspirations in general, in music, cinema and books?
Among our favorite albums stand out definitely "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis and "Ah Um" by Charles Mingus. But apart from the discs, perhaps we could talk about the artists that have inspired us and they are many: as far as jazz is concerned, World Saxophone Quartet, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, John Surman; from the pop avant-garde, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell and David Byrne; from funk and afro, the incomparable James Brown's horn section, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti and Ali Farka Toure; from klezmer and Balkan music, Frank London of the Klezmatics, Goran Bregovic and Boban Markovic. As far as cinema and books are concerned, I can only answer for myself: among the numerous films with social and psychological content from the 90`s that I have mostly appreciated, I remember "Time of the Gypsies" by Emir Kusturica, "La Haine" ("Hate") by Mathieu Kassovitz, "No Man’s Land" by Danis Tanovic, "The Golden Door" ("Nuovo Mondo") by Emanuele Crialese, "The Visitor" by Thomas McCarthy. About books, I can mention some recent readings: "Life and Fate" by Vasily Grossman and "The Kindly Ones" by Jonathan Littell, that reflect both the horrors of the camps, war and totalitarian regimes, but viewed from diametrically opposite points of view; or my discovery of two classics of psychoanalysis applied to social phenomena, "Mass Psychology" and "Civilization and Its Discontents" by Sigmund Freud, that unfortunately prove to be surprisingly current.
Which would be the next step of “Banda Olifante” after the amazing homonym album and which are your future plans in general?
We are working on the realization of a second album whose release is scheduled for February-March 2011, as a further step of the project "Banda Olifante". An album that includes, as in the first cd, the presence of international musicians including the Malian kora viruoso, Mamadou Diabate.
Which is the most “crazy” dream of the band?
Based on our idea of music as an exchange of experiences and styles, to take a world tour playing in every stage with new special guests.
What in your opinion is better: Working in the studio or giving live concerts?
It is difficult to answer this question, because these are two very different expressive dimensions. The work in studio is fascinating because it allows us to get as close as possible to our idea of sound, as we imagined the songs before making them and listening to them; in particular, it allows us to treat their formal aspect. On the other hand, live performances convey a large amount of energy through the participation of the public; they are more satisfying from an emotional point of view.
Is it difficult to play music in a 12 piece band?
To organize and manage the network of contacts in a band of twelve elements (over fifteen, considering our musician friends that sometimes help us in the last minute substitutions) is very complicated, if we think about planning the rehearsals, recordings and live transfers. To play is another thing, where the difficulties are transformed into the pleasure of experiencing the interaction of individual instruments as if they were cogs in a well-functioning machine.
What would you say to Berlusconi if there was a possibility to meet him?
Berlusconi, a master of communication and mass hypnosis, does not care to listen to others, but he rather wants himself to be always listened. The greek myth gives us a symbolic metaphor which says that the nymph Echo becomes a stone when she tries to be heard by Narciso;by this I mean that it is difficult to find subjects to share with a mind that has yet remained to its childhood. How can we otherwise judge, from a rational point of view, the conduct, the statements, policy choices of our Prime Minister?
Have you ever been in Greece?
This is another question that I can only answer based on my personal experience. I have visited it many times as a tourist, turning out far and wide: from Thessaloniki to Crete, through Athens; from Lefkas, Delphi and Meteora up to Alexandroupolis. When one thinks of the Mediterranean, the splendor of its islands, the pine forests, the olive trees and cypresses, its cultural liveliness as a crossroad of people and stories, you immediately think of Greece and always with the desire to return.

Come vi e venuta l'idea di formare una banda fusion brass?
L’idea di dare vita ad una formazione numerosa, composta in buona parte da strumenti a fiato, e nata dal desiderio e dalla stimolante scommessa di poter esprimere, soprattutto in concerti live, un forte impatto sonoro di origine acustica utilizzando solo in piccola parte fonti elettrificate. Il nostro progetto vuole anche rendere omaggio all’universo degli ottoni a partire dallo stile tipico della tradizione bandistica popolare, per approdare a generi piu impegnati come il jazz e la sperimentazione contemporanea.
E` fusion una risposta alla mancanza di nuove idee nella musica mainstream?
Per fusion noi intendiamo “contaminazione”, e in questo senso ci muoviamo in un ambito musicale diverso dal mainstream. La nostra e infatti una musica “di frontiera” o “di confine” (termini che tentiamo di tradurre con l’inglese “fusion”), che non si ispira al jazz rock degli anni Settanta ma a quella corrente piu attuale definita da molti come “global jazz”: vale a dire a quella felice sintesi tra generi differenti in bilico tra improvvisazione e world music.
Quali sono i vostri dischi preferiti di sempre? Quali sono le vostre ispirazioni, in generale, nella musica, cinema e libri?
Tra i nostri album preferiti spiccano sicuramente Kind of Blue di Miles Davis e Ah Um di Charles Mingus. Ma forse piu che di dischi possiamo parlare di artisti che ci hanno ispirato, e sono molti: sempre per il jazz, World Saxophone Quartet, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, John Surman; per l’avanguardia pop, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell e David Byrne; per il funk e l’afro, l’incomparabile sezione fiati di James Brown, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti e Ali Farka Toure; per il klezmer e la musica balcanica, Frank London dei Klezmatics, Goran Bregovic e Boban Markovic.Per quanto riguarda il cinema e i libri, posso rispondere solo a titolo personale: tra i numerosissimi film di argomento sociale e psicologico che ho piu apprezzato dagli anni Novanta, ricordo Il tempo dei gitani di Emir Kusturica, L’odio di Mathieu Kassovitz, No Man’s Land di Danis Tanovic, Nuovo Mondo di Emanuele Crialese, L’ospite inatteso (The Visitor) di Thomas McCarthy. Per i libri, posso citare le letture recenti: Vita e destino di Vasilij Grossman e Le Benevole di Jonathan Littell, che descrivono entrambi gli orrori dei lager, della guerra e dei regimi totalitari, ma osservati da punti di vista diametralmente opposti; oppure la mia riscoperta di due classici della psicoanalisi applicata ai fenomeni sociali, Psicologia delle masse e Il disagio della civilta di Sigmund Freud, che risultano purtroppo sorprendentemente attuali.
Quale sarebbe il passo successivo di "Banda Olifante" dopo l'album omonimo sorprendente e che sono i vostri progetti per il futuro in generale?
Stiamo lavorando alla realizzazione di un secondo album la cui uscita e prevista per febbraio-marzo del 2011, come ulteriore tappa del progetto “Banda Olifante”. Un album che prevede, come nel primo cd, la presenza di musicisti internazionali tra cui il virtuoso maliano di kora Mamadou Diabate.
Qual`e il sogno piu "folle" della banda?
I: Sulla base della nostra idea di musica come scambio di stili ed esperienze, compiere un tour mondiale suonando in ogni tappa con nuovi special guests.
Cosa c'e di meglio nel vostro parere: lavorare in studio o dare concerti dal vivo?
E’ difficile rispondere a questa domanda, poiche si tratta di due dimensioni espressive molto diverse. Il lavoro in studio e affascinante perche ci permette di avvicinarci il piu possibile alla nostra idea di suono, a come ci siamo immaginati i brani prima di realizzarli e ascoltarli; in particolare, ci consente di curare il loro aspetto formale. Mentre i concerti dal vivo ci trasmettono una grande energia attraverso la partecipazione del pubblico; sono piu gratificanti da un punto di vista emotivo.
E` difficile suonare in una banda di 12 pezzi?
Organizzare e gestire la rete di contatti di una banda di dodici elementi (oltre quindici, considerando gli amici musicisti che talvolta ci aiutano nelle sostituzioni dell’ultimo momento) e molto complicato, se pensiamo alla pianificazione delle prove, delle registrazioni e delle trasferte live. Altra cosa e suonare, momento in cui le difficolta si trasformano nel piacere di vivere l’interazione dei singoli strumenti quasi fossero gli ingranaggi di una macchina ben funzionante.
Cosa vorreste dire a Berlusconi se ci fosse la possibilita di incontrarlo?
A Berlusconi, maestro della comunicazione e dell’ipnosi di massa, non interessa ascoltare gli altri quanto piuttosto e lui che vuole essere sempre ascoltato. Il mito greco ci fornisce una metafora emblematica quando racconta che la ninfa Eco si trasforma in pietra tentando di farsi ascoltare da Narciso; con questo voglio dire che e difficile trovare argomenti condivisibili con una mente che e rimasta ancorata alla propria infanzia. Come giudicare altrimenti, da un punto di vista razionale, i comportamenti, le dichiarazioni, le scelte politiche del nostro presidente del Consiglio?
Siete mai stati in Grecia?
Anche qui posso rispondere sulla base della mia esperienza personale. L’ho visitata molte volte come turista girandola in lungo e in largo: da Tessalonica a Creta, passando per Atene; da Lefkada, Delfi e le Meteore fino ad Alexandroupoli. Quando si pensa al Mediterraneo, allo splendore delle sue isole, alle foreste di pini, ulivi e cipressi, alla sua vivacita culturale come crocevia di popoli e di storie, si pensa subito alla Grecia e sempre con la voglia di ritornarci.
